I just got this on my newswatch on my computer.

Rat Poison Contaminate in Pet Food (http://www.click2houston.com/family/11346835/detail.html?treets=hou&tml=hou_natlbreak&ts=T&tmi=hou_natlbreak_1_10210203232007)

Wow...that's crazy. Thanks for the update, P. What really upsets me is EVERY article I see they say "several animals died" that is SO the understatement of the year!! They lost several in my vet's office alone. I'm sure that can be said about most of our vet's. I wonder how many really didn't make it. :sosad:

I'll keep checking the internet for more news. I don't have a lot to do today at work, so I'll have some time. I'll post anything I find.

Here's a link about the class action lawsuit that has been filed concerning the pet food.

Thanks for the link. I hope it costs Menu Foods big $$$ and a lot of heads should roll on this one.

Someone told me today that Hill's foods are also made by Menu...I can find NOTHING about this anywhere, nor has anyone else heard this, and of course they're not on the recall list...but since Alex has been eating canned i/d for the last 5 years, thought I'd see if anyone had heard anything...

It's a voluntary recall and it's only the gravy types. I/D is not in the recall. I also have 2 dogs on I/D and they are doing well.

I think most of the recall is voluntary - which means stores are NOT required to pull it from their shelves. You'd think, for good customer relations, they'd be eager to pull any questionable food! Hmmmmmm . . .

From another article:
Aminopterin is not registered for killing rodents in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, though it is used as a cancer drug.

Here's one thing to think about - the pet food industry isn't federally regulated. Scary thought. And a lot of pet foods - not the super premium brands like Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, Eagle Pack, etc - but the cheap ones made by food companies like Nestle, the store brands, and I am guessing ones in this recall - a lot of those foods have rendered meats in them. Rendered meats can include roadkill, can include euthanized pets.....and so if you are wondering how a cancer drug ends up in pet food, you can probably draw a conclusion that maybe some lab rats or other animals used for testing were rendered into pet food. This topic has been discussed a bunch on my raw feeding lists and someone else brought that up. It's a REALLY good point.

More info on rendering and the non-regulation of the pet food industry, not for the weak-stomached: http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/petfood1.html

That's a good point, Courtney. And yet another reason to buy food for your dachsie that is made with human quality ingredients.

I don't know about the dog food at Petsmart but they have pulled all the cat food brands that were on the recall list.

Yesterday on CNN, a shelter (not local) stated that they lost a good number of cats (15 I think?) and that it was due to the donated food being on the recall list. So, not only did they lose the cats, but they had to pull about 75% of their food stock and trash it. And now, they are left with barely enough to sustain the animals they have for any length of time :sosad:

That's hard to say with all the serious health problems Bill has. Personally I think if he's doing fine, why change. I would ask your vet for his/her opinion. I'm using I/D right now b/c of intestinal problems.
