O wow she ROCKED!!! I was SO proud of her! NOt sure why, as it doesn't take any training or talent I guess but to see her instinctively do what her breed was made for is very cool.
I think she remembered the place even although it's been a year...
But when she heard someone say "GET THAT RAT" to their dog she started SCREAMING. I might be partially deaf now...
She did a big long tunnel with a right angle turn and worked the rat (which is digging, bitting the wooden bars keeping her from the rat cage, screaming barking, whatever) for a full 60 seconds. She also was able to be held back 10 feet from the tunnel and when I let her go, right into it. You could hear her screaming all the way through LOL.
We also got to do terrier racing after a lure. Very cool although she had no chance to catch it racing against much longer legged terriers...there were no other weens there. But she got to run like a fiend and bark which she loves. Then a border terrier attacked her (prob. annoyed by her incessant screaming) which scared the hell out of us (and everyone else too I think cuz like 3 people threw their pop at the dog before we got to them) but he didn't hurt her at all so I don't think he was really biting her. She wouldn't run the next time but I don't think it was cuz of that...it was getting hot and she was tired (from running and screaming and digging and biting) She is passed out now (and farting for some reason). I am sure she could get her junior earth dog title....they will have a real test in August.
I wonder if she'll run agility tomorrow??? Or just sniff the ground and hunt for rats.

Cool! Watching them do what comes naturally is so much fun! I'd love to do Earthdog with Bailey. Maybe one day!

Well she DID run agility just fine Sunday after doing the earthdog Saturday so that is so cool. She didn't even bark on the course which she usually does (just to let everyone know is is HERS I think) Of course she may have been hoarse from all the screaming and barking Saturday... But she qualified both her runs Sunday and people commented on how nicely she ran so....it's all good!

Geez, Amy, how did I miss this post??? I'd love to see the Diva diving underground, although perhaps we could give the screaming bit a miss  I've always wanted to try earthdog...I think Alex would have been great at it. She's too old and infirm now though :sosad:...maybe the next one!! (I do feel bad for the poor rat though...do they have such a thing as drag trials (no, not male dogs in dresses, but scent only) like they do with fox hunting? When I was a kid I used to hunt (as in on horseback) but we only did drag hunts where they laid a trail in the morning for the hounds to follow in the afternoon. Just as much fun, and no foxes or other living prey animals were harmed! It was an absolute blast!!!!! (Of course, I was young and foolish and actually like gallooping cross country jumping impossibly large walls...believe me, those days are LONG gone!!!)

Oh man I want so bad to see that girl in action. I would also love to see how Moo would react. :)
Ooooh that sounds fun. I've seen earth dog on tv, specially done with cameras and its sooo neat. Glad she had such a good time and still did well in agility.
Weird about the farting....

That is soooo cool!  I went and watched earthdog once and it was great! They had the "trial runs" up close where you could see what was going on. Cash would love to do that as well as lure coursing. I guess I need to get off my butt and get his ILP and take him to some meets. :duh:

I've not heard of any drag trials but we did do a field trial...rabbits aren't harmed in the least...just disturbed as people beat the brush to scare them out. The dogs don't chase them cuz they don't see them...you hold them away until the judges see where the rabbit went, then you put them down and they just follow the scent. I do believe there are tracking things where they drag something with a scent but I don't remember what they are called...I was gonna take a tracking seminar with Laika but it was too expensive...I'd like to try it here. I was thinking of getting some rabbit scent and trying it out maybe..

It really was fun. These were just practices so the dogs didn't need any papers but I am waiting on Owen..he's sniffy enough in the agility ring. I'm gonna get his ILP though, too. Just gotta take the pictures!! Then when he gets his championship maybe I'll take him to earthdog too...or I might wait cuz Owen is so fast at agility I am trying other venues with him...starting the 15th in USDAA.
The next practice is July 14 and I know at least one other dachshund is gonna be there...I am hoping they do the racing again and Laika can run with Dazzle. Of course Dazzle is a standard...but still it would be more fair than her running with terriers.
