I have never thought much about pet insurance, but with a doxie, I am wondering if that is something I should look into. Anyone here have opinions on the positive or negative of pet insurance? Have any recommendations on reputable pet insurers?

I know people who have VPI and are very pleased with it. You need to research fully (read the small print) before buying. I think it's best to open a savings account for pet emergencies.

The following link has done research on 4 companies, orig posted by Tasha's mom.

I have no experience with insurance - am curious what others will say.

I don't know too much about the ins and outs of insurance period, but I do know to make sure that dachshund back surgery is covered. Some won't cover it because they label is as a "pre-existing condition" since it is so common.

ITA with Patt. I would open a savings account and put the amount of money that the insurance would cost in it every month. You'll probably come out better.

Yep..that's the major problem. They will NOT cover back issues and if I wanted to get Chief insured that is WHY I would want it...Here's an article that was just posted on insurance though in case you are interested.

Thanks for the article link. I would want it mainly to cover the cost of something catastrophic or very expensive, such as back surgery. It would be awful to be faced with having to put your pet down because you couldn't afford expensive surgery or cancer treatment or something like that.

I agree...we put aside $$ every week (a Chiefy account) for that purpose.
