View Full Version : Look at what I make my fifth graders do (dachshund related)

They each get a photograph from an old dachshund calendar, which they have to draw by looking at it (not a cartoony version of a dog.) They then transfer their drawing to scratchboard, which is a white piece of tagboard with black ink over the white, so that when you scratch the ink away, tiny white lines show. This material lends itself perfectly to drawing the fur on animals.

I am so impressed with the results, I had to brag. (Sadly, they don't photograph well- they are so detailed and beautiful in person, but the glare from the lights ruins the photo!)

Those are awesome, you're such a creative teacher! And I do remember using scratchboard, but the results were never as nice as those doxies!

Wow!!! Those are impressive, even thought we're missing some of the finer detailing!!! You have some talented students, they're lucky to have such a fun and involved teacher. :appl:

Those are so cool!! I remember doing something similar with black paint over crayon colored paper. We would scratch the black paint off and the design would be multi-colored....I can't draw worth a darn though!!

Tracy, I just found out that only one elementary school in Waco ISD (not sure about 6-12 grades) has an art teacher. :sosad:

I love it! Really nice! I never did any of this type of art in my Art class.
We always did projects on poster board or drawing paper. Mostly pencil, pen, watercolor, or paint.

That is so neat! I wish I would have had an art teacher like you when I was in school!!!
