My Heart is Breaking

Otto was having such a wonderful day "hanging" with the pack, playing, jumping, humping the poor pup ...

Then about noon, my sister came home from work for lunch and the whole pack greeted her with barking, jumping, and lots of excitement. A few minutes later we noticed Otto wasn't feeling well. A little while after that he vomited and then seemed to be doing better. I took him outside so I could keep an eye on him while raking the grass. A little while later I went to check on him and he was unresponsive. I scooped him up and rushed him to the vet's office.

They did x-rays and said his lungs were full of fluid and he was having heart failure. We decided the kindest thing was to let him go. They gave him a shot into his heart (his veins were gone by then) and I held him and said goodbye as he slipped away.

The necropsy showed that he had a hemangiomasarcoma (a blood filled tumor) that ruptured causing heart failure. There was nothing we could have done to save him, so I am glad we let him go "gently into the night."

He had a wonderful day playing with the pack and laid in the tall grasses to drift away at the end. I am glad his last day of life was so much fun for him, but my heart is breaking for the little guy I fell in love with at the pet store 10 years ago (before I knew about byb and puppy mills). I have loved him ever since I held his tiny 2lb body in my arms and rocked him to sleep that first night.

He was my first pet that I truly loved and will always be my favorite. I hope he has a wonderful time chasing all those squirrels in doggie heaven. :hearts::hearts:

Almost the exact same thing happened to my "pet store puppy" (likely the same type of tumor - his did not rupture but it invaded his heart and lungs suddenly). He was 10 years old as well. I am sure Tristan will greet Otto at the bridge.

Thank you all for your kind comments. We like to think that my little great nephew Christopher (who passed away the day before) needed a little doggie friend to play with in heaven. Hope he has lots of balls handy to throw for the "throw the ball, throw the ball" obsessed dachsie.

I am also so happy I took that wonderful picture of him yesterday morning. He is a beautiful guy.
