Goodbye Mattie

Mattie passed away this morning around 2:30am, from bloat. I fed him his dinner yesterday evening, a 1/2 can of his prescription S/D that he'd been on a while now. He went to bed last night looking and feeling fine.

Around 2:15am, dogs started barking in the kitchen, which was very unusual. Mom woke up to see what the commotion was, and found Mattie severely bloated. She ran into my room and woke me up in a panic. He was trying to continuously throw up, with nothing coming up except white foam, and he was having a hard time breathing. I immediately recognized that he had all the symptoms of bloat, and ran to get dressed and find my keys and cellphone so I could rush him to the emergency vet. Mom yelled at me a minute later and I went back into the living room. He was on the floor dying.

The closest emergency vet was exactly one hour away, and that's while speeding, and we would've never made it. I sat with Mattie, and he passed away within 5 minutes. Less than 15 minutes passed between my mom finding him, and him passing away. It hit so quickly and so suddenly, that my brain is still in shock and trying to process what happened. It feels so weird, this morning letting everyone outside to go potty and play, and him not following right behind wagging his tail with excitement.

My thoughts are truly with you during your grief. I'm so sorry he had to go that way, but you did all you could do. There are no "what ifs" that can be posed, because, barring magic, you did all that could be done. You're a great mom and he loves you fiercely, and when you see him again, there will be a spark in his eyes, yes, he will have whole eyes and he will hear your voice, and he will get to thank you for the life you gave him.

I am so sorry. I am sure it was heartbreaking to have to know you couldn't help, but I also know that Mattie knew you loved him and did everything you could. He will be waiting for you at the bridge, and you will be welcomed with his whole heart. R.I.P., little guy.

I am so terribly sorry! Although bloat in dachsies is not common, it does happen on occasion. I wish I had the words to express how sad I feel for you -- there was nothing you could have done, and Mattie is in a place of pure love. :hug99:
