Sunday, even though he could barely walk, Dumbledore spent a good bit of the day outside sunning himself in the nice weather. Though he could not join in the outside romping, he barked at the others in excitement. He eat some yogurt treats and felt like eating a few pieces of chicken McNuggets for supper. Early Monday morning, he got up, and decided he was ready to take a final drive by moonlight before crossing Rainbow Bridge.

His condition deteriorated Sunday evening. Monday morning at 2am we woke up to him having very blood diarrehea. We decided that we could not wait until the 10am appointment, and that he needed to be seen now. We did not get to see our oncologist as it was not his shift, but did see one of the ER doctors. Dumbledore progressed to the point of not being able to stand on his back legs, and he was also wheezing. We did a full panel blood work, and his liver values were off the chart high along with very elevated white blood cell count and very low platelet count. We decided to do an x-ray of his stomach area as it would also get the back and atleast his lungs. The x-ray confirmed our suspicions of the blood work, and showed that the lymphoma had progressed to the point of affecting the organs and that was why he was having diarehea and vomiting earlier. The lymphoma was ravaging his liver. As for walking problems, one of his disks was also starting to calcify. He gave us a resigned look, and I know now was the time to go ahead and let him go to sleep. There was nothing else that could be done. It had progressed beyond what higher doses of prednisone could have helped with.

At 5:30am this morning, Dumbledore feel to sleep one last time in my lap. Of course, while we were waiting to get things set up, I was holding him and he pooped one more time on me. He fought hard until the very end. He resigned that it was now his time and stopped fighting. He was gone with just only a little bit of the last injection. The doctor had just barely even pushed the plunger and I felt him go.

Bye bye my little man.

Oh David (and Mrs. David).

I am so sorry for your loss and honored to call you "my wiener dog friends". You have truly set the bar for taking great care of your beloved ween, and getting up at 2:30 in the morning for him and escorting him to the Bridge on his schedule, on his terms.... totally the last loving, caring thing parents can do.

NOT FAIR in any way, but he will forever be your heart dog. I am sorry for your loss but glad he is in no more pain and you wouldn't let him suffer. What great parents.

Agree with Lisa - the dark wizards lurking at the Bridge have NO chance against our hard-fighting boy, the one with the powerful white light and the heart of pure gold.

Rest now, sweet boy. You will forever be in many, many hearts. (And many weens will get an extra smooch today, from grateful hoo-parents.)

Draco, you are the man of the house now. take good care of the girls, and Mom and Daddy probably need some extra lovings...

My heart is heavy for you, and tears fill my eyes. He fought the noble fight, and you gave him everything a loving parent could - a final release to a pain free sunny land, where he will wait for his family to join him. You were by his side until the end of his time on earth - no parent could have done more. Thank you for sharing your boy with us all, this one is a tough one for everyone. Godspeed sweet Dumbledore :candle13:

Thank you everyone. We are doing ok. It hit my wife the hardest when it was clear that it was the only decision to make this morning after finding out his disks were calcifying after not having any back problems and seeing how far the lymphoma had spread. I knew this was coming, just didn't expect it yet. When I finally went to bed at 8 this morning was when it sank in for me. Dumbledore was my bed buddy. I am working from home today, and when I do, he is usually laying on the pillow next to my chair the whole day. Draco is now laying on that pillow. He usually lays out in the den with the girls, but today he is on Dumbledore's old pillow and blanket. Even though the other three went with us, they did not go back to the "comfort room" with me where Dumbledore was put to sleep. My wife took them on out after letting Draco give Dumbledore a final sniff and ear lick. She did not want to go back to see it happen. I think Draco may be missing Dumbledore a bit.

My heart is raining my soul clapping bangs of thunder as my brain heats up with jagged flashes of lightning all the while the devastating storm of losing my Logan whirls around me drowning me in sorrow.and then a rainbow. a bridge. I site a fuzzy face as he stands close and waits for the newest candle to burn brightly in the heavens.
My anguish fades ever so slightly as I realize he is not alone. He just went ahead to be there to greet a family member who tired of the fight and left our world for the next.
David we ache together. Our boys left us. We have memories, we have stories. we have pictures but we don't have our boys. I'm so very glad they have each other.

Thank you everybody. We have had a few bad moments today. The worse for my wife was this evening's feeding time. We are so used to having to get Dumbledore's medicine together. When she realized she no longer had to get the medicine together, the tears flowed. I took care of the morning feeding this morning. When I finally went to bed this morning at 8am after being up all night with Dumbledore, seeing a smooth, flat fleece blanket hit me as he was my bed buddy. He would be curled up underneath that blanket. Also since March 4, 2002, Dumbledore has always been at the door to greet me when I came home from work, even the times I had pinned him up or tried to crate train him when I first got him. Even in his youger days, he knew his duty was to greet me at the door no matter what obstacles were in his way, such as a locked crate door. He was my dog longer than my wife has been my wife.

There was still a half a pepcid on the counter top from Sunday night. He wouldn't take it, or the food it was wrapped up in. Some beds need to be washed from where he vomited or pooped in it right before we got ready to take him for his late night moonlight ride. On the ride down to the vet hospital, the moon light shined on him. I was so busy on Sunday, and was really wanting to put him in his chariot/stroller Monday morning before the vet appointment to give him a push around the neighborhood. He was always trying to get out the door to take a stroll down the side walk.

During the time I had alone with him before the final shot, after telling him how much he was loved, I told him it would be ok if he came back for a visit if he wanted to, whenever he wanted.

The vet hospital said we should have his ashes in about a week or so. Thankfully the price quoted is very good. I was extremely worried about putting him down and being able to get his ashes this morning because the mortgage is due at the end of this week and I usually have just enough money left over until the next paycheck. I was afraid we would not have anything other than a lone collar and empty harness.
