His back is all bowed up and he doesn't have full control of his back legs. He is walking, but he is doing the Drunken Dachsie Shuffle, He still has bowel and bladder control - thank doG! - He doesn't act like he is in too much pain and he is eating.
I called his vet. She wasn't in, but one of the other vets, whom I trust completely, spoke with me. I have Pred 10mg and Tramadol and Derramax here at the house. He told me to give him a Pred right away and get his hind end into the crate. He said I had everything here that he would give him there, with his symptoms and history he doesn't feel an Xray is necessary so keep him in the crate and call them tomorrow with an update. If he gets worse I am to bring him in.
If you can spare a couple Rayz for the little jerk they would be appreciated.

Oh no!!!!! Tons of :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: on the way. and a :hug99: or :hug99::hug99:
Wouldn't hurt to give him 1/2 a regular strength pepsid 1/2 hour before his meds cuz the pred can be hard on the tummy.
:crossfin::crossfin::crossfin: that he's better soon and not worse EVER.
(sigh). I am so sorry for Mitch! Poor guy. That is exactly what we went through with Pixel Glad you have all the necessities at home. Lots and lots of rayz for him. :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: Lots of sanity rayz for you too for the next 8 weeks! :bighug:

He slept good through the night. I tried to get him to come out this morning (4:30am. He gave me his "WTH Woman! Go AWAY!" look) to potty. He wouldn't come out of the crate on his own. I pulled his bed out with him in it to see if he wouldn't come out because he couldn't or was just too comfy. He was pretty comfy.
He is still very wobbly. I carried him out to potty but he only wanted to come back inside. He is sleeping again but today is going to be a challenge for Grandma. Luckily she keeps a crate set up at her house so he can go right into it. We'll see how it goes.

I just got an email from Tracy. Mitch has taken a turn for the worst and is now having trouble standing and his back legs are crossing. She has him at work with her and was getting ready to take him to the vet a few minutes ago.

Oh no!! If you are talking to her, my personal experience is day 1 is oooh, something bad is happening and day 2 is a million x worse, day 3 is even more horrible and from day 4 on we starting to see a little improvement daily.
When we brought Pixel to the vet, I knew what it was, but the vet did a full and complete exam and wasn't sure until Pixel dropped down on his side right at the end. The Saturday he was doing the sailor walk and I got him on the steroids, the Sunday he was doing the crossed legs and loosing muscle mass and failing the toe test on his left side. Of course, we were using a sling 100% of the time after that, so an actual timeline of improvement is hard, but I would say it was Tues or Wed that he was starting to improve. But his muscle mass didn't come back until week 3 maybe? when we started to ease up on the sling a bit.
I am still sending lots and lots of rayz for Mitch. Hopefully they feel conventional treatment will work. But he will be in my thoughts if he requires emergency surgery. Please keep us updated! :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: x a million.

That's a very good point, Lisa. Bogart definitely got worse before he got better. When Tracy emailed me she said she was leaving soon for the the vet, I plan to give her a call later this afternoon and see what the vet said.

Oh - what a freaking day! I had a gut feeling this morning that I shouldn't leave him at home so I sent a text to my supervisor - who calls herself Mitch's Aunt - to ask if I could bring him in with me. She said "of Course" so I packed our lunches, threw his wire crate in the back of the Trailblazer, put him in the car seat and off to work we went.
He was a perfect lamb at work. The only person he barked at was the owner and only because he startled him.
The vet xrayed him. He has a bulge between 13 and 14. She really thinks the crate rest will do the trick. He has zero calcification's to his disks. She said other than this problem, his back really looks good. Go figure. She asked if I knew how he did it; I told her he must have been sky diving or jumping on a trampoline when I wasn't home.
He is on Prednisone, Tramadol, and Methacarbamol and 1/2 a pepcid 2x's daily. I couldn't find the Pepcid this afternoon. I found it on the way home, it is 10mg tablets. I gave him a whole one to start since his belly was bothering him (Duwayne said he was eating a lot of grass) I hope it won't kill him!! I waited 1/2 an hour and gave him his night time pills.
If I'm missing something let me know.

Sounds like you are doing everything right. the extra pepsid won't kill him LOL.
The only thing is...x-rays do not show discs. They can detect a difference in the spacing (you can see the spaces between vertebrae where the discs are but not the discs themselves) so there really is no way for her to know what is going on from an x-ray. You can't see if there is disc material occluding the spinal cord but if he is losing function, I assume that is what is happening. But also no point in spending a shitload of $ on an MRI unless you are going to do surgery. Also calcifications or the lack thereof doesn't really mean anything. In fact, the discs that blow are more often NOT the calcified ones.
Does he still have bladder and bowel control?

She did say if he didn't seem to be improving or got worse in the next couple days we would do an MRI but she really didn't feel it was necessary right now. He does have bladder and bowel control, in fact I took him out about 45 minutes ago so he could potty, he did both so all is good on that front.

It's sounds like you've got it all covered. Are you going to be able to take him to work with you so you can watch him?

No. Grandma will baby him to the point of him being rotten. I set his stroller out (it is an old baby stroller/carriage) for her so she can wheel him up to her house without having to carry him. She already has a wire crate set up for him. She won't let him over do it. If I know her, once she sees he won't jump out of his stroller, she'll be wheeling him up and down the road so he doesn't get bored. He should be juuuust fine.
I am looking at actual pet strollers. It is hard to choose one. There is a pet gear in blue on CL for 60.00 I may call him. A lady here in town has a zebra striped one for 50.00 that I can buy for 53.00 - which includes the shipping - from amazon! I might try to talk her down. I don't know what to do.

I got this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-BestPet-Beige-Large-Heavy-Duty-Pet-Dog-Cat-Stroller-/280527680297?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4150c0b329
but there's the same one a bit smaller for 49.88 free shipping and this seller ships really fast.
I've only used it 4-5 times but have been very happy with it...had all three dogs in it (that's why I got the bigger one). it folds up and has a storage area and pockets and such.

Good for grandma! :cheer3::cheer3: It's important to keep them from overduing and so hard to do once they start to feel better. I have no idea about strollers (I have a little cheapo one) but I know that it helped me a lot with Bogart.
