View Full Version : Low-la is in the Hospital: January 16th Update #55

She was fine when I got home from work yesterday. As the evening wore on she started to get quiet. She refused her potty walk and her snacks! I knew something was up just not what.

She didn't wake me through the night to drink but when we got up this morning she drank and drank and drank. Then she vomited. I did not know dogs can projectile vomit. What a mess. Poor baby.

I called the vet and told them I was on my way with her. She was burning up but shivering. I kept covers on her the whole trip in. When we got there they took us back and asked me a couple questions before telling her Dr. she was there. Once she found out it was Low-la they quit dinking around and took her away and started an IV and did blood work.

Her Dr. called me about an hour later to tell me she has a raging infection and she was going to keep her for the night and possibly until Saturday until her white count comes down. She said it wasn't related to the Chemo but I'm not 100% convinced :conf4:. She may have picked up a bug being there all day on Monday for her ACTH test. We'll find out tomorrow I hope.

I called at 5:00 to check on her. They said she was quiet and resting. She had not vomited again so they were going to try to give some food and water in the morning. She'll be starved! She has had nothing to eat since 6:00pm Wednesday!

Some rayz would be great if you can spare them.

Yikes! Poor Low-La. I feel for her. Sending lotsa healthy :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: for her speedy recovery & full health. She got so very sick so very quickly. Good that you brought her in so fast, and that they know her well. Is this perhaps canine influenza she caught in hospital? Please give her a hug?

Thank you for all the rayz and Prayers. Low-la didn't have a great night. She vomited a couple more times in her crate overnight. The Dr. called me first thing this morning to tell me what was going on. She said even though she acted perkier than yesterday, she was still pretty sick and dehydrated so they are going to keep her over the weekend with hopes of her getting to come home on Monday.

She is getting IV meds and fluids. They were going to try to feed her something this morning. I'm fixing to call them for the afternoon update to see if she ate and kept it down if she did.

I talked to the tech. They gave her some water and if she holds that down over night they will give her some food in the morning. Her temp has been normal for the last 6 hours. I really think she caught the dog flu due to her immune system being compromised from the Chemo. She spent all of Monday at the vet getting her ACTH test run, I really think she picked whatever it is from there.

I think that's a good possibility, Tracy.

I think that's a good possibility, Tracy.
:ditto:
My cushings dog got a raging bacterial infection that came close to killing her..but that was what caused her to be dx-ed. Just having cushings reduces their immune system so that, then chemo, then being at the vet with all those "germs"...

Still not a good update. She is still vomiting and won't accept food - not even chicken! They did say she is not lethargic. She gets up and walks around and is aware of what is going on, which is better then she was on Thursday.

I don;'t know. I guess it is a waiting game now. The vet is closed from noon today until Monday, but is staffed. They did say they would call if anything unusual came up.

No updates today. The techs are not allowed to give any information over the phone without talking to the vet first. If something drastic changes the vet will call. It is a scenario of 'no news is good news'.

I have had other pups there over the weekend with no ill effects so I'm OK with the policy.

Thank you for caring and asking about Low-la. I wish I could give you a better update but...

Tracy can't get on DLC from work so she sent me an email and asked me to post an update for her.

Low-la is about the same. She had diarrhea through the night. Her white count is still very elevated and she is still dehydrated. I'm going to try to get in to see her on my lunch break. On one hand I want to see her, but on the other, I don't want to upset her by leaving her there when I leave,

I'm sending more :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: for Low-La.

I just got back in the office and had an email from Tracy waiting. Here's what she said.

Her breathing is very labored and she didn't recognize me until I called her Low-la Belle then she looked at me and relaxed a little. She, of course, has lost weight and she was very shaky/shivering even though she was in a blanket. They had an IV going. I insisted on speaking to her Dr and finding out exactly what is going on.

She told me when Low-la came in her white count was over 55,000 - it should be around 11,000 - today it is around 25,000. She said the labored breathing is because she is dehydrated. Her heart and lungs are clear. Her kidney numbers are a bit off because of the dehydration other than those things she is stable. No fever or vomiting. She has not had anything to eat. They are holding food until her gut is healed. They are giving her meds to prevent ulcers. Bottom line it is a raging GI tract infection. How she got it is anyone's guess.

I don't forsee her coming home for another few days. If then. She is soooo sick

It sounds like Miss Low-La is a very sick little girl. :sosad:

I just talked to Jane about this, and of course, being a LONG way from Low-la, she didn't really want to comment too much, but she's also wondering why, if they're giving IV fluids, she's still so dehydrated. She said that dehydration should be fixed within a maximum of 24 hours of admission, usually. Also wondered about it maybe being peritonitis...sometimes, with the lysodren apparently, there can be some leakage from the bowel, which could cause peritonitis. Just some thoughts you might want to ask your vet.

At any rate, more :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: and :hug99::hug99::hug99: coming your way. SO worried up here!!!!!!!
