We just got back from the vet with Peaches. She has Colitis again. We think it is stress again this time. Last time we weren't really sure so guessed it was stress. This time she had a few things to be stressed about.

John left for Dallas on Friday and he just got home last night. On Tuesday night, I took the dogs to class by myself. So she had to sit in a crate during Piper's class. She got really worked up in there. She vomited a small amout of yellow liquid on Wed. morning. Then she wouldn't eat. So, I got mad and yelled at her because I assumed she was being stubborn.

Then she wouldn't eat again last night, and I put her in her crate. She vomited a small amount of yellow liquid in the crate. I finally got her to eat after that. This morning she came downstairs by herself, and we heard her vomiting again...a small amount of yellow liquid.

John worked from home today. He said she wouldn't eat breakfast and she spent the whole day under a blanket on the couch. Then around 4, he noticed she had pooped and there was blood in it. So, we got a vet appointment.

Since there was actually reasons to be stressed, we are doing the same treatments again. If this happens again, we are going to do some tests to see if something is wrong with her internally. She is a very emotional dog and gets really worked up. The vet said their bodies can release bad bacteria when they get stressed.

Now that I know she has problems with this, I am going to have to be careful with how I deal with her. I am not sure what to do. She is a very alpha dog. If I am not strict with her, she is a total Miss Thing. If I try to discipline her, she gets stressed. How do you deal with that??? At $180 for the vet visit and meds, we can't afford to have her stressed out too often. Maybe she needs a vacation!

I think a vacation is just the thing. R&R for all 5 of you! And maybe more tests--it would be nice if there were a more lasting treatment. :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for sweet Peaches! Hope she feels better soon!

Peaches we love you! Don't be stressed sweetie, you have the best life - looks, fashion, oodles of tennis balls, tons of love, a love bug for a brother.

I don't know anything about colitis T, is their a vet specialist that she could go to for treatment?

Laika also tends to have problems like that when stressed. She quite quickly will get bloody stools...the vet said it's her intestine shedding the lining. Yuck.
I used to happen when we'd do agility trials for two days, on the Monday she'd be sick. Also if we were traveling it would happen.
It doesn't happen after trials anymore. I don't know if it's because both of us are more comfortable or because I take a can of the EN prescription food, cut up the food into little bits, and make sure she eats at least a little of it every hour or so. Having an empty stomach seems to make it all worse and if she feels just a little yucky, she just won't eat her dog food. If she doesn't eat, it gets worse and worse but she always seems to be willing to eat some of that cut up EN...

It sounds like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) to me, dunno if the vet mentioned something like that to you. I was just researching IBD, irritable bowel disease, today because we got a Dane in rescue with IBD. IBD can be managed often with a grain free (ie raw) diet. Not sure about IBS - as it is occasional, I bet you would treat the cause (stress) and not the symptom, and as you said, that could prove difficult.

Here is a chat with Lew Olson about IBD that has some IBS info in it too: http://www.doghobbyist.com/articles/IBDChat.html including recommending peppermint (the herb) as a way to soothe IBS. If you need more info, I'd join that K9 Nutrition yahoo group - so many smart people on there who could surely help you.

Poor Peaches!!!!!!! :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz:

I don't know what to tell you about Peaches, but I'll bet it is triggered by stress. A lot of intestinal upsets are. Peppermint has been used for years to treat colic in infants. It might be worth investigating. Rescue Remedy might also be something that would help her anxiety and consequently keep her stress level down.

Sending rayz for Peaches. :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz:

Poor Peaches! Could some of it (the whole stress thing) be from her horrific trauma prior to coming to you? Post traumatic type thing that gets triggered from 'normal' stresses?

Hope she gets better and doesn't have another episode....:bigrayz: :bigrayz:

:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: Rayz for Miss Peaches!

Pokey gets the same way, so I understand a little. He has been much better in the past few months because our schedules and routines have been OK. There will be some traveling in April, so I'm bracing myself. Being older and mellow, I don't have to put him in his place too often. He responds to firm corrections if need be. I'll PM you!

Poor Peaches!

Sofie and Seb would get stressed out when we went to shows. In fact right before our move to Sarasota I had all four of mine with stressed induced colitis. It didn't get bad because we caught it early. The way our old vet explained to me is that when they gets stressed, they bowel lining releases a huge amount of mucus. And it is the first sign of coming trouble. Poops get looser. Some blood can show up in the poops too. Then the secondary infection can join in and make it a whole lot worse. So, at the first signs of mucusy poops I was told to start Metronidazole & Sulfasalazine. In fact she told me I could even start a low dose of them before a trip or the event that I know will make them stressed. She gave me enough to last a while.
