Hello everyone, I'm new here. I'm here to hopefully make friends with some fellow dachshund lovers.

I got my first dachshund October 15th of last year. His name was Dexter and he was amazing, my best friend. <3 He snuggled on my neck and slept with me every night. He woke me up in the morning with his neck snuggles and some well placed kisses. He would go everywhere with me, he was my shadow. Every late night bathroom trip, every truck ride, every trip out of state.. My whole family, "large dog people", adored him. As my daughter always called him, her little brother, he was a family member, just as much as any of us. My pit bull Bentley and him were the oddest looking pair of brothers, the tiniest miniature dachshund and a great big pit bull.. But they didn't notice. In fact, Dexter was definitely in charge out of the two.

Dexter is now my furbaby in heaven. I know I will see him again, and it will be amazing. It helps. But my heart still aches for him, I don't think it ever truly will stop. I love you, Dexter, I always will. I'll see you when the time comes, baby.. I can't wait to hold safe in my arms again.....

I never imagined that I would lose him so young. And when we did I felt the walls of my world crumbling down around me.. but I selfishly never imagined how it would effect my family as well... My daughter would cry during truck rides, and have bad dreams about him.. My Bentley stopped playing and just layed around.. Every day we would get up in the morning he would go downstairs looking for Dexter, as well as looking outside too. That hurt me in a secondary way I never imagined..

With the advice of my family, I began to look for another.. Not to replace my Dexter, but to help us all cope with his loss and fill a void we all had in our lives.. My daughter named him Sven, from Frozen. He has some similarities in his personality to Dexter, but many more differences. I was a little stand off-ish toward him at first, actually toward the idea of ever getting a new dachshund. But he demands more and more of my love and attention, and it is harder and harder to resist him. And watching my daughter dote over him, and Bentley gently lick and sniff him really tugs at my heart. <3 Dexter would have loved him..

I love my family.. On Earth and in Heaven. <3

I'm loving Sven, too, and am so sorry for your loss of Dexter. What a short time, yet what a big love!

Welcome to the DLC. We are all crazy dog people here, so you're in the right place!

Yes, way too short... :( Thank you. Sven is proving quite a bit more onery than Dexter, but he is very spunky. I believe we will continue to have our hands full.

Thank you for the welcome too, you all seem very nice and helpful from what I've read so far.

Hi and welcome to the DLC. Dexter's personality seems like the perfect companion. Sorry for your loss. :hug99:

Sven has some big paws to fill. He's an adorable pup. L@@k into that cute puppy face! Is he LH or WH? Mini or std? Brindle color? Your photos just ooze of comfort and calm tranquility. Ahhhhh. It appears he fits right in with the rest of the family.

Thank you. :) He was the perfect conpanion, for sure... <3

Sven is a long haired. His mother weighs 12-14 pounds they .said depending on the time of the year, the dad weighs 9 lbs. So he will be miniature to tweenie sized. His face is red brindle, but his body looks more of a cream brindle. He's doing great so far. <3 But boy is he onery... lol

I know how difficult it is to lose a furbaby. But your heart is large enough to love another. Each has their own personality, I've learned after 30+ years of being a doxie-holic! Sven is adorable!!

I am very sorry for your loss of Dexter. Many of us here ache for our sweeties that have gone ahead without us.

Sending a big congrats to you as you welcome Sven into your lives. May you enjoy many healthy, happy and loving years together.

Don't be shy with pics, kay? We would love some puppiness and silliness!

What an adorable puppy :). He may grow out of the orneriness. They do take awhile to settle down and focus. We don't recall Cassie making eye contact for the first 6 months... she just ran around making mischief. Now she follows me 24 hours a day, and is the sweetest dog ever :sillylove:.

(she's still ornery)

Sorry about your Dexter. I felt like that when we lost our Tristan. But there was plenty of room in my heart for these two girls.

Thanks for sharing your boys with us!

Welcome from TX. I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I rescued my first doxie in December and I have to say I am smitten with the breed. So happy to hear you opened your heart to another. Looking forward to lots of pics and seeing Sven grow up. :) Love your bully too. He is a handsome dude. Xoxo

Loving my Elliott,

Lol thanks. Needed those laughs. Yes Dexter was into humping too, but I thought he was older when he started! Then again I ended up with him at 4 weeks old. I already had him for a month before he was 8 weeks old, so maybe he had by 8 weeks..
For whatever reason, the people I got Dexter from lied about the age of the litter. I had never owned a small dog before so didn't even question the size, although I thought it was odd that I was questioned by a manager at Petco of the age of my puppy, although she never argued it with me. After having trouble getting him to eat or drink anything I texted the people asking his birthday and they said September 15th, making him a month old. It explained why they wouldn't let me see the mom (she would probably be distraught/ ticked.) And it explained the trouble getting him to eat. Trust me, I was beyond mad and for awhile wasn't sure if he was even going to survive. Never buy a dog from a BYB, more often than not, the puppy's best interest isn't in mind... Maybe not always but it definitely wasn't in my experience.. Dexter, whenever I got him was under a pound, while Sven weighs 2 pounds at 8 weeks.

I've noticed that it is impossible for Sven to meet my gaze! He's either sleeping, running, or chewing on me.. lol. I can't wait for him to grow and develop his personality beyond the puppy stages. :)

Yes Bentley is a very handsome sweetie.. :) He's an onery one too though. He actually is an American Bully, but it's just easier sometimes to call him a Pit Bull... Oh and btw, I didn't cut his ears! Those were done when he was very young and before I got him. I don't mind them, but I know some people do and I personally prefer them natural. I only have one picture of him before the cut... He was a heart melter!

See?

So sorry to hear about Dexter, especially at such a young age. :hug99: Sven is a cutie patootie alright!! It's been a VERY long time since I had a puppy (like about 20 years...I'm a senior rescue kinda girl :)), and I must admit that they're pretty cute!!!:love98:

I"m very sorry about Dexter and that you had to learn about BYB's from personal experience.

Just remember from now on, if you can't see the parents and the whole operation, you don't want to buy from them. Or better yet. Just adopt from a rescue! :cheer3::cheer3::cheer3:

Yes I definitely learned from that experience. If other rescues are anyrhing like the one I volunteered at I wouldn't be able to adopt in my current situation. I saw many on Petfinder that I absolutely fell in love with (And felt terrible for after reading some of their storys!). But I looked and never even contacted any of them. I'm a renter, and I know my rescue wouldn't adopt to someone in that situation. As well as living by a highway. But maybe that isn't always the case? My landlord loves dogs himself and is fine with them, so that isn't an issue. And trust me, if we ever moved out I would go back to my grandparent's house where my furfamily is THEIR furfamily, and always welcome, before id ever move into a non-pet home.

On another note.. Sven has been chewing on Bentley all morning..... and I think he likes it lol. He wags his tail and licks him everytime. And then fuzzybutt gets all worked up and starts barking at Bentley. Too cute. <3

You might try contacting them. I work with a rescue here in Houston and we have adopted to people living in apts so renting in itself is not an issue. Most rescues understand that not all situations are perfect. But that doesn't mean that it can't work and work well. They always say that the dogs shouldn't be crated for more than a few hours at a time, but they understand they people have to work and so sometimes dogs have to be crated for 8 to 10 hours. It's not ideal, but its okay. I've had to do that with my dogs and while they didn't like it as well as now that I come home for lunch every day, they did fine. You'll never know til you try.

As a side note, don't get too attached to any one dog that you see on the internet. Explain your situation and what you are looking for to the rescue. They can often match you with a dog that would be better for you and your situation than the one you thought you wanted.

Wow. I am sorry I missed this. Welcome to the DLC. Great place to hang out. I am so very sorry to hear about Dexter.:cutiepie2 Such a cutie. I had a dachshund DOxie B. who passed away several years ago and his side kick sister pitbull Nerogirl was so very depressed. I am glad you have little Sven. :cutiepie2He is such a cutie. I am sure he will be herding the pitbull in no time. Dox was the boss. It is so funny. Anyway...welcome.:cheer3::cheer3:

Thank you for the welcome. Yes, it was really heartbreaking to see how depressed he was.... But it warms my heart to see him and Sven get into their shenanigans. They've grown very close. <3

Sven growls and bites at Bentley, and Bentley traps him under his arm while they "wrestle". Its so cute how gentle Bentley... Most of the time! He doesn't know his own size sometimes and it has to be interrupted.

Hehe. :) A 2.4 pound doxie pup and a nearly 70lb Bully pup, best friends. Love knows no boundaries, humans could take lessons from our furbabies.
