Ok as most of you can see I am posting this at some stupidly early time in the morning.. Usually I would be sleeping right now, but ti seems Miss Thing doesn't want to go to sleep... And has taken to howling. The lst 2 nights she's whined quited a bit, but not enough to really wake anybody up for very long... I cannot go without sleep, but I can't let her run the house either as she is not potty trained or paper trained! We went on a loooong walk around 6 or so last night and I took her out around 10 to go potty before putting her to bed. Also she seems fine as long as I am in the computer room with her... I don't know whether I should try putting her in the room with us or not..
I really can't have her doing this as I am not very pleasant if I don't get enough sleep, and God forbid she start waking Billy up.. That will definetly put an end to my fostering!!!
If it were just me, I'd put her in the bedroom with me and just shut the door, but I can't do that Billy would have a fit!
PLEASE send me any and all advise you've got!!
I sent you a reply to your PM.

I'll continue to look around but I think you have your answer in the above link.
As hard as it is you are going to have to set rules for her, and don't let her "work you". When you are all going to bed, take her for a nice long walk to use up her energy and and get her potty done. Then put her in the crate and that's it! Once she is in for the night do not take her out of the crate b/c you are rewarding her for bad behavior such as whining, barking or howling.
Perhaps you can move the crate next to your bed and see if that helps.
I guess since you haven't returned you are getting your much needed rest. Sleep tight!

We failed that part of dog training- hence, both dogs sleep in the bed with us, under covers and draped all over us.:rotfl:

Ooooowww, us too!!!! I actually did it on purpose.....when I got Julie I was having serious problems with my then-husband. Julie was the perfect thing to put in the bed between us!!!:rotfl:

Unfortunately, as much as I want to put her in the bed with us Billy would soooo not go for that!! :sosad:
But he never heard her so I guess I'll just ignore her until she stops...
Ohhh, this training thing is TOUGH!!!
Duchie howls (rooOOOOOOOOO) if she is not in the room with us. When she was sleeping in her crate I put it on MY side of the bed on the floor and she was fine. The isolation was, I think, her problem.
and IMHO "in the bed with us" would drive the Grinch up the wall...it does Sutton. Duchie has to prowl the bed quite a bit before she finds the perfect spot, and it is hard to get used to being careful when you shift in the bed at night for fear of dislodging the Princessa.

Yeah, it's funny because if I am in the computer room like on the computer she's fine. She'll go in her crate and go right to sleep, but if I get up and go into the living room she has to come in whatever room I'm in as long as I don't motion towards her...
Definitely, that would not work... It's hard enough dealing with a pillow stealing cat much less a bed hoggin weener dog!!

Isn't not a good idea to allow fosters to sleep with you. I'm sure Patt has given you some terrific advice and I may be an echo.
Are you using a wire crate? That's all I use. I keep the crate in my room and cover it with a blanket at nite....at the slightest sound I give them a firm "Quiet" ....but, you can't give in to there demands or they will continue to raise the roof. If that doesn't work put the crate in a room where you won't hear them. If you know they don't have to potty or something is wrong with them you have to ignore the behavior.
Of course this is all easy for me to say....I failed fostering :rotfl:

It's a regular pet taxi, but a friend is bringing me a wire crate thing so we're gonna give that a shot tonight! And I'm going to put it in the bedroom next to me so I can "Quiet" her if she starts without having to totally disrupt my sleep by getting out of bed to hush her.
Sounds like you're on the right track.....good luck and let us know tomorrow how it goes.

Good Job....you'll get it Amanda, your heart and efforts are in the right place. Always keep the water bottle handy too
In the bedroom next to you, even with the crate on a chair next to the bed so she can see you, sounds like the best idea. Tasha sleeps in her own bed on the floor next to DHs side of the bed. She gets to nap in da big bed with me occasionally, but DH will not allow her in with the two of us. She gives me the sad pleading eyes every night, then finally goes off to her bed.

OHHH, that sounds like a great idea... I'd just worry about finding a chair big enough to support the crate safely... Wouldn't want her to wiggle about and knock herself off the chair!! Not only would that probably traumatize her beyond belief, but it would probably send my heart into spasms!!
And I'd love to just lock her in the room with us in her own bed, but if Billy woke up and stepped in piddle first thing in the morning... Oh that would be baaaaaaaaaaaaaad!! We are working on the potty training.. She goes out very frequently when we are home, so she has plenty of opportunity, but she still piddled on the floor yesterday.. And she's not choosing particular places to go... So it's not like I can place a piddle pad and be confident that she'll use it..

I think putting the crate in the room with you makes sense...Being the softie, it sounds like she is scared by herself.
Instead of a chair, you may want to try a small table like an end table or small coffee table sort of thing. Just a thought.

I used a Pet Taxi crate for Reesee when she was a pup and I put her in & put a blanket over it. She would "yip" every so often. She was always (still is) very vocal, she makes noise when she yarns. She moans & groans. She "makes" her bed with the cover & turns in 15 circles, pulling the cover & digging at it...drives ya nuts!!!
I would just "Quit it!" to her and that should work for you.

Yes I agree dogs are pack animals so they like to be with their pack which is you. My two fosters sleep in crates in my bedroom and Boomer will whine a little bit right at first but I tell him to "quite" and he does. He also has his favorite toy be takes to bed with him and if I'm lucky it's one that the sqeeker is broken if not then I tell he to "settle down" and he'll stop the sqeeking and go to sleep. Both Ruby and Boomer can see me from their crates as I have a low bed (well it's on the floor) so that also helps with them.
Your doing fine and keep up the good work. :hug99:

These are all great ideas. I am going to try to find a spare small table that I could use in the bedroom. I would love to be able to put her favorite toy in with her, but unfortunately she doesn't really have one... She's still too afraid to really play with anything... The lady I got her from said she liked raw hides and gave me a bone, but I don't feel comfortable letting her have that without supervision! Now if the cats are playing with one of her toys or whatever, she'll run over pick it up and haul hiney back to her box with it...

You could "accidentally" fall asleep with her in your arms:hearts:

That might work on the couch, but not in the big bed... She's not allowed on it at all. :sosad: (cept when he's not home )

ooooooooohhhhhh Amanda, you sound just like me,,, Heidi and Princess are NOT allowed on the big bed at all when my DH is home,, but Rach and I sneek them on the bed if Nap goes off to work and we want to relax in the bedroom and watch some T.V...
Mucho :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for the crate training, honestly, I think she is just lonely in that crate all by herself and will do much better in a wire crate and in the room with you..
Last night Rusty started to give out a few barkies after we all went to bed and the dining room was dark, he could not see Heidi and Princess and they are always quiet, so I went out there and yelled for him to be quiet and he did and went right to sleep, but for tonight I will move around the s tuff in the dining room and put his crate near Heidi and Princess so he can see them.
I think that if they can see you and know that you are near them, or other dogs are close to them they will not be so afraid.
So, I would try out putting her in the room with you and have the crate near your side of the bed, this should help,,

Yup! Went home at lunch and set up the wire crate in our room next to my side of the bed. but will also have the other crate set up in it's normal spot if she starts up and won't settle down. I also set up the x-pen in the kitchen today so that she has more room to move about so hopefully she'll use up a little more energy instead of sleeping..

I can't thank you guys enough for all of your suggestions! I took Trixie out for her walk later than usual and I put her bigger wire crate in the bedroom next to my side of the bed and she slept great!! She only made a little bit of noise when Billy came home from the Awful Waffle, I "Ouiet"ed her andshe went right back to sleep!! Hopefully this will continue to work!!!
I am eternally grateful to you all! :hearts: :hearts:

So true!! A tired dachsie is a good dachsie. And crate training...I think it's a must (my opinion). They need their "safe" place.
