I have been involved in a pet emergency the past several days and have spent a lot of time in waiting rooms. Yesterday I was waiting for some results and a lady and I got to talking. She takes care of a ranch that includes three dachshunds. One of those dachshunds needs back surgery and the owner isn't willing to pay for it and asked her to take it back to the ranch and "put him down". In my sleep deprived delirium I told her I would try and help her find him a home.

His name is Duke, he is sweet and cute, has huge paws, he is five years old. The dachshund rescue group of central texas isn't taking any owner surrendered dogs at this time - do you know of any other resources or someone who would be willing to take on a dog that needs surgery?

Thanks for your time -

Update today:

The estimate was for $2000 - the dog is being taken care of by lady named Laurna, it is her boss' dog. I ran out of possible leads for a home or shelter yesterday and told her to call the ASPCA to see if they could help. If you do find anything let me know - but I assume if they don't find someone or someplace soon they will put him down since he is in pain.

This is so terribly sad. It is awful that we cannot take the dog, but with 8 dogs boarding, one who has been there for 5 weeks, and the fact that foster space won't open up for MONTHS, I know it's finally been decided that we have to say NO. It really sucks. :(

:sosad: TX seems to have more then their share of Dachshunds needing homes.

If I had the money, I would take him on in a heartbeat. Let me check with some of my "rescues" here; they are all-breed, so there might be a chance if donations and such are at an acceptable level. Then all we would have to do is transport him. Is there any way to get a couple pics of him, more info (why the huge feet? ) on him..like is he UTD on shots and such, and how long he has been "down?" Why haven't these people helped him? Are the other dachsies ok? Just so I can answer any questions my all-breeds might ask.

Thanks a buch, Joey, and I'll see what I can do on this end. :hearts: :hearts:

Update here...

Duke is doing wonderfully. I went and picked him up which was hard. The girl really loved him but the actual owner is a jacka**. She was his employee. Anyway I took Duke right to the specialist. He is a sweet guy.

Black and Tan Standard Shorthair.. 21 pounds (could stand to lose a couple).

Anyway, the vet was hopeful because he had some sensation in his back feet still. The next say she said she wanted to run more tests because the visual symptoms and the test results were not saying the same thing. She kept him over the holiday and as she was waiting for more test results, she turned to find him STANDING! No surgery. He is now on a treatment plan of rest and acupunture. He is in a foster home in Houston and is being found to be just a wonderful dog!
