Hard to explain what happened today. He seemed to have hurt his foot on our walk and he was walking funny and wanted to lay down and not walk. I went into the shower thinking I'd check on him when I got out. After my shower, I found him limp on the kitchen floor. I thought he had collapsed. He'd had a BM in the kitchen The worst part is that I panicked and was unable to go near him. I was not even sure if he was maybe just asleep. I wanted to go to him but I couldn't. That makes me so mad at myself. I was calling his name and getting no response. I called his name a lot and got no response but I soon realized that he was breathing. Eventually he lifted his head up but seemed out of it. At that point I was okay to go to him. He got up and walked again but was wobbly at first. But within a few minutes, he was acting okay. He is still a bit lethargic but he gets that way in the summer. I don't know what is normal and what isn't!! In the meantime I had called my vet, who was expecting me. My parents came over to help me b/c I had panicked so terribly. We took him to the vet and he got a thorough checkup and blood tests. The vet thought maybe he had been stung by a bee and went into shock but there were no signs of it. He wants us to watch him for signs of epilepsy. I don't know if it was really just nothing (maybe my dog hurt his foot for a split second and then happened to go to sleep on the floor). I'm all confused!

Kerie, deep breath, :bighug: another deep breath. I know, its terrifying when they're hurting and can't tell you. It may indeed have been a seizure. My Dh's coworker has a dog who will have them from time to time. The meds are worse than the seizure's so she's just learned to cope. Maybe the blood tests will tell you more when they come back.

:bighug: I cannot imagine how scary that was--we never know how we'll react till something like that happens. Sending lots of :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for Oscar!

Ummm...given what's just happened to Austin, could it have been a disc? Did your vet check for this? (Just a thought.) It's hard to cope sometimes when they scare the poop right out of you like this (been there:rolleyes:) but you got him to the vet really quickly and that's the best thing you could have done. :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: that it's nothing serious. Keep us posted, OK?

CRIPES! Hope all is well and please don't fret over how you reacted. The outcome was positive so focus on that. Big FAT:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: to you and:hug99: for you both to feel better.

Seizures are VERY scary....from what you discribe it does sound like a seizure. How long did he seem "dazed and confused" for? Not all dogs that have seizures, have epilepsy. Take a deep breath and try not to over think thigs until you hear from the Dr.:hug99:

Here's tons of:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :hug99: :hug99: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: for the poor little fella. I hope he is okay. Do you have carpenter ants around there? Sometimes their bites are just terrible!!!

Kerrie, I am so sorry for both of you! It will be all right. He may have hurt his neck, hence the paw thing and walking funny. That happened to Harold.
That can cause temporary paralysis.
It also could have been a siezure. If the blood tests don't show anything, you may want to see a specialist and get his spine/neck checked out. Keep us informed!

Please don't be too hard on yourself. You were there for him, that's what counts.
:ditto: what LeAnne said. Please don't beat yourself up, Kerie. When Duchie had her stroke I was worthless. I was just simply terrified something was wrong with my baby and wigged out.

You got him to the vet and did all the right things. It just took a minute for your brain to get out of panic mode and kick in.

I am so sorry your sweet boy is sick, and hope that you find out what it was soon. Sounds like a seizure is not out of the question- the pooing sounds like an involuntary thing.

:hug99: for you and  that all will be well with the Little Man soon.

What would I do without all of you? I get busy with work and stuff, and have been on less. Yet I have the nerve to pop on as soon as I have a problem and everyone still helps me. I feel like I'm going to cry!

I've been super stressed with work. I was wondering if my reaction today was b/c I'm so hyper anxious in general right now. The vet was asking all these questions, after the fact, about how Oscar was when he was down, and I didn't even know b/c I did not go into the room unitl Oscar picked his head up.

Once you find the problem you could also check into holistic care for him. Is he taking any kind of supplements?

It does sound like a seizure but I'm wondering if it might have been cause because he got over heated. I know it's super hot outside here and my gang won't even try going for a walk so they stay outside maybe 5 mins before they've had enough and want to come back in.

You did good by getting him to the vet asap. :bighug: Hang in there and if you need to talk we're all here for you.

So sorry Kerri, it is very scary when a dog has a seizure. This may just be a one time thing so take a deep breath and relax. I know easy to say and hard to do. :) Thankfully you got him to the vets right away.

It is really important though IF there is a next time to keep tract of the time. When he went down (or when you noticed him) and how long the seizure(?) lasts also if there is more than one. Usually no meds are prescribed unless the seizures are very frequent. I had a toy poodle that had seizures and was prescribed meds, she did very well.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: to Oscar.
Please keep us updated.

Patt--my vet and/or our trainer alway tell me the exact same things that you tell me!! I'm also replaying in my mind, some episodes form the past and wondering if there were other seizures that I didn't realize (I chalked it up to Oscar just acting weird sometimes). Then again, I wonder if there was even anything wrong today, seizure or anything else. I just don't know.

The trainer has reminded me and my DH that even though we grew up with dogs, and I had a dachsie that was considered to be mine when I was in my 20s and still living with my parents, we are still really like first time dog owners. He thinks that we ended up with a dog that is a challenge for first timers. But I love my Oscar and you all know that!!!!

I really think he could have had Heat Exhaustion.
Don' t worry too much over it OK. It doesn' t sound like anything major.
I' m sending Mega Rays for you & Oscar :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz:

Oscar's bloodwork came back. He had some slightly elevated liver enzymes (3 tests that came back elevated). Oscar is being placed on an antibiotic and on Flagyl, which is to soften his bile. The vet said that sometimes this happens after "an event." He wants to make sure that the liver enzymes are not going to rise further. Oscar gets more blood tests in 2 weeks, after the meds have a chance to work.

So, I wonder if there is something wrong or if it's just b/c if you look hard enough and give your dog a lot of tests, you will find something.

He is on 2 antibiotics?? Flagyl is also and antibiotic, usually used for colitis or bowel inflamation. From your update, it sounds like the vet thinks he has an intestinal infection of some sort? With the antibiotics clearing up the infection, his levels should go down....does that sound right?
If that's it, try not to worry.... in 2 weeks all should be fine. :hearts:

Oh, so Flagyl is the antibiotic and the other one is the one to soften the bile.

Yes Flagyl is an antibiotic....what is the name of the other medication? I have a canine perscription book...if you'd like I can look it up for you and tell you what it says?.....when I get home from work

Kerie, Marvista Vet (a clinic in LA) has an awsome pharmacy webpage where they explain a lot of the more common drugs. Because Alex is on so many different meds, I've done quite a bit of hunting around to educate myself about them, and this is one of the most informative sites I've found: www.marvistavet.com/html/pharmacy_center.html Lots of :bigrayz::bigrayz::bigrayz: for Oskar and :hug99: :hug99: for you...it'll be OK! Honest!!

I'm so sorry I missed this thread. I hope that Oscar is doing better. A lot of dogs have seizures and quite often they do very well without any medication. Sending :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz:

Keri, try not to worry. Just take a deep breath and take one day at a time. Don't worry about side effects of the medicine he's only going to be on them a short time and they will help him get better. The vets have to run tests to help them identify health problems if any.

Sending Oscar many healing :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for a quick recovery. Big :bighug: :bighug: for you!
