    Tracy.....
That is an undiagnosis and wouldn't cut it for me.
If I were you I would get a consult with a Neurologist.
There are no "early" signs...they either have it or they don't.
Ease your mind and get a second opinion..... if it is his back you need to do something about it now, not when it gets worse.
I will continue to  for your handsome boy.

ITA with Cat. I'd get another opinion. Most vets aren't that well versed on disc disease. Also, why are you afraid to use a harness on him? If it's a sprain, the harness isn't going to hurt it and if it is a disc problem the harness isn't going to aggravate that either and is a lot better than a collar which can further hurt their back.

ITA with the last two posts - get another opinion from someone more knowledgeable about dachsie backs - like a neurologist. And I'd still keep him crated until that time - JIC!!! You don't want to deal with dachsie back surgery, believe me. BTDT. PLEASE see a neurologist - and keep Mr. B. crated until then.

I'm not afraid to use a harness- I do on walks. For convience, though, we usually just collar when running to the grandparents, because they're only on lead when they go to the bathroom.

I'll talk to Paul about getting a second opinion and see if there are any other good vets around here.

I agree~a second opinion would be best. When I was looking for vets, I called about 10 before I found one that had a lot of experience with dachsies(and as it turns out, was the same vet that my great aunt used~and she always had dachsies)

  I hope he gets better soon. Try to keep him quiet. He feels great cause he's all 'roided up. You don't want him overdoing it and making things worse.

Did the vet take an x-ray? Sending more for Mr. B.
They may be small, but you should see their hearts. Shelter/Rescue dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter/rescue dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness on your side. Anon

Tracy he doesn't need a 2nd opinion from another general vet...he needs to see a neurologist ...this is what they specialize in ...IVDD and other neuro problems.
In the meantime, I would take this seriously an assume it is IVDD. Keep him crated ...and ask your vet to refer you to a neuro.
Does he have tension in his tummy? Is he straining to poop?
