I'm sorry to hear about Shadow having problems with his eye. Sending mega and :pray:ers for him.
They may be small, but you should see their hearts. Shelter/Rescue dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter/rescue dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness on your side. Anon

My family & I have been taking our dogs to this vet for as long as I can remember. He is good & would never do anything that was not needed. I really think that what my vet said is for the best. I have considered a 2nd opinion.Originally Posted by areese

I'm sure that your vet is very good, but sometimes a specialist can offer other options. It's like going to a gynecologist instead of your GP. GP's have lots of good general knowledge, but sometimes they don't know the latest techniques and medicines available. Veterinary medicine is changing almost as fast as standard medicine and keeping up with all of the newest techniques and medicines is very difficult.
ITA - I like my vet a lot, too, but when it comes to a possible back issue with one of my furkids, I'm not sure she's got enough dachsie and/or back problem experience and I'd certainly consider a second opinion. To save an eye, I think I'd go that route.
I am so sorry to hear that poor Shadow has to have his eye removed. A big ditto on a second opinion, though. Especially with such a drastic procedure. If there's no alternative, just remember that Shadow will be just as lovable, just as active & in a few weeks he won't even know he only has one eye. They really do adapt so well.
