    Default pet insurance???

We are looking into medical insurance on the suggestion of a friend who had two doxies who needed back surgery (not from accidents) and couldn't afford it so he had to put them down.

We do not want to ever encounter this decision.

    Any suggestions??

I've never gotten pet insurance. I have one credit card that I never use. It's just for emergencies for the crew. If I need to have surgery, I figure I'll just put it on that credit card and pay it off when I can.

Scooter Pie and Daisy May came with "shelter care pet insurance" and it only covered certain things, and it only covered 500 bucks worth of Daisy May's costs for bowel obstruction, and NONE of Scooter's dental. He would have suffered greatly if I hadn't had his teeth seen to. The older the pet gets, the more it costs so I'd recommend putting the 30-40 bucks monthly you'd spend on the insurance into a savings account or something with a high yield where your money would work for you. (why can I advise this when I can't friggin DO it myself  at me)

There are quite a few pet insurance companies available. Fees usually vary depending on the age of the animal, and the coverage you want. Most of my vets clients have VPI and are very pleased.

I have a savings account for pet emergencies. Personally I think this is the way to go. You make payments to yourself and also gain dividends in the process.

They may be small, but you should see their hearts. Shelter/Rescue dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter/rescue dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness on your side. Anon

That's a good plan, Andrea. Self insurance is a lot better than paying it to some company. But it is hard to do. You have to be really disciplined.

We have pet ins. Rocky just had surgery on the 4th almost $2,000 (dental work, he was 4 when we got him, don't even get me started) our cost $189.84 his ins...began last Nov and it's $36 a month for him (being he had a dental in Nov, we upped the plan so it would cover this time) we've saved over $4,000 to date just on him. Clay has the lower plan $27 and it's still worth it, covers all her shots each year, 1 dental (unused to date), and any office calls, surgery is discounted, as well as all meds. Basically Clays plan is simply the cost of her dental (all the other shots and stuff are "free" if you look at it that way)

I had VPI many years ago when my former furgirl had back surgery. At THAT time, her surgery cost $900 and the insurance paid $600 on it. I'm SURE the coverages are very different now.
