They may be small, but you should see their hearts. Shelter/Rescue dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter/rescue dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness on your side. Anon

Yup, that's a big "possum"! Where I'm from we have all sorts of strange woodland creatures. Skunks, Possums, Squirells, Coons, Deer, and about anything else you'd think would live in the mountains! LoL!
Possums are mean. I was bitten by the skull of a dead possum....now that's MEAN!!! Probably my own fault for having the damned skull in the house, but geeze.....it bit me in the ankle....it was DEAD!!!
They will fight when cornered, so I don't want my puppers tangling with one, and I don't want another run in with one, dead or alive.
The only run-in I've had with these critters was a 3 am dog-barking-gotta-kill-something wake up call when I was dog sitting for 3 doxies!!!! (before I even got my Julie). Had to squirt the darned thing with a water hose to make it leave so I could get some sleep! It didn't bother me except that it made the dogs go nuts!:duh: Glad your furkids were relatively unfazed.
P.S.-love your new siggy Cat

Opossums are amazing, really. The only marsupial in North America. Related to Koalas and kangaroos!!!!! So thier little babies live in a pouch. They have opposable thumbs!! (on their rear feet) and a prehensile tail!!
They seldom have rabies cuz they have a resistance to the virus.
They also eat rats and mice, for those of you who dislike those little animals too...
We have a lot of them here but they don't bother things as much as the raccoons do. Or that damn evil groundhog under the deck (actually I think he finally left     )

I like all those animals that were listed. The only time I ever had a freak out was when I was in high school and cleaned a co-op at night. This place had a grain elevator plus a feed store. So, between the two buildings was a garage door and I would come face to face with skunks!! :faint: The only good thing is it was face to face and not face to butt meetings. They always ran off as I backed away. They were eating the mice so that was good.
My parents have pretty much every critter in their back yard at one time or another including fox and they live in town.

ITA!! They are very mean animals, and eat all sorts of nasty garbage - and they stink, too - at least, all the ones I've run across have smelled awful.Originally Posted by bsquared
hard to kill with a baseball bat, we usually use a shotgun or turn the big dogs on them...
now bear in mind they are quite greasy (all dark meat) so you won't need much Crisco in the pan if frying. if you boil it, let the grease rise to the top and cool, then you can just take it off with a big wooden spoon and it will be less messy and healthier.
I have found a good shortcut for making dumplings- use flour tortillias cut into strips and drop them into the almost boiling water- they will be great and you don't have to mix and roll out your own dumplings.
If you use a shotgun MAKE SURE you get all the buckshot out when you skin him, otherwise you might crack a tooth.
Happy hunting!
