How toxic are onions?

How toxic are onions to dogs and how much do they have to eat for them to be toxic? Does it effect all breeds or some more than others?
What are the signs to looks for if a dog gets a hold of some onion?

According to my vet if a dog is going to react to onions they are going to react badly. Here is a good link

vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine, hemolytic anemia and liver damage.

Well someone here left a chicken pita souvlaki on the table tonight, was more then half eaten but had onions in it. And little Miss Mika somehow go to it while my back was turned for 1 minute and ate the rest of it!!! By the time I called the vet was too late to give her peroxide to make her vomit, more than 30 minutes had passed. :(

i read that broccoli is bad for dogs. I didn't know that and I'm sure they've had their share of broccoli in the past. Now that they're on diets, I've been looking for veggies to supplement their kibble and was surprised by what is not okay.

When I was a kid the vet used to tell us to put a few tiny pieces of onion and a few drops of safflower oil on the dog food as it was good for the skin and the coat. Guess they have discoverd new stuff......scary.
