There is ONE spot that we sometimes walk by that Bailey always does it lately. Only this year. We've been in the same neighborhood since we got him. I've seen other dogs do it, but I never knew why. Reese has never done it. Anyone know?

Theo started doing that on walks too..no clue why, maybe its to spread their scent?
I've heard or read somewhere that they do that to kick up dirt over their potty to cover up the smell. IMO, they usually miss with the dirt, but that's what I understand is the reason. Makes sense to me, anyway.
I would think it would be to cover their scent, that makes sense. I wonder why he is doing it in this ONE spot, and now? I haven't seen any new dogs in the neighborhood.
Reese tries to cover up his business when he goes in the snow. It's too stinking cute.

Scent glands in feet=marking the territory. Dogs are NOT about covering scents, they're about stirring them up. They want to let all dogs know that "I REESE THE AWESOMELY GREAT DACHSHUND WITH NO KNOWN ILLNESSES OR TESTICLES HAVE BEEN IN THIS AREA, IT IS MINE AND NOT YOURS" They're not covering up, they're spreading it around. The poop or pee is the text of the announcement, where the scent from the paw pads is the siggy.
Oh Andrea, you are so wise! :D

Silly me - should have known Andrea would know the real scoop!!! Very illuminating information!!
Awww shucks. There are a few things my obsession with reading all things canine has been good for.
that's funny, because Joy doesn't typically kick the dirt with her hind legs after she goes, but there is this one trail I take her to that's in the woods where she does it every time. go figure....
Dog people call it "scratching off". That's my only contribution to the discussion
Salsa does it all the time but my weens do not. Laika however, will squeeze out one more poop or pee to "cover" the other dog's. always.
