Default Debarking to quiet noisy dogs: Inhumane or protective?

Dr. Marder, a veterinarian, tells those who are curious that Nestlé, a dachshund-terrier mix, is hoarse from too much barking.

But that is not true. The Marders had Nestlé’s vocal cords cut by a veterinary surgeon after a neighbor in the family’s apartment building on the Upper East Side threatened to complain to the co-op board about the noisy dog.

My opinion? Inhumane. There are other ways to stop a dog from barking, but it requires patience and dedication on the part of the owners, and the majority are not willing.

    My vet won't do it.

I have very vocal dogs, but I live in a house, when they get too rowdy outside I bring them in.

I don't know if it comes down to putting a dog down vs. surgically debarking there is no question. But he clearly didn't really work with his dog either to modify the behaviour.

I have heard byb's debark their puppies by shoving a pipe down their throat. But I don't know if it's true or not.

I'm sure my vet would never do it. Neither would I. If the neighbors complained that much, I'd video it first so I'd know and have proof of just how much they barked. Then, I'd move. No doubt. I live in a house also and if Scooter and Cash bark too much, they just come in the house.

Never asked if they'd do it here. I probably should be de-STFU'd though. I think that's worse than the dog's bark.

I agree that it is worse then the bark...that raspy sound drives me nuts. You learn to live with the barking, I knew what I was doing when I got shelties and dachshunds. As for my neighbors, I dont complain about their music and they dont complain about my dogs.

Mean, cruel, nasty thing to do. I would love to hear my Stomper barking again and talking back to me, then I know he was okay again.
I love the sounds of my crew talking to things outside (and sometimes talking back to me inside) and to warn me about things. It is music to my soul not a problem.
Maybe we should take out their voice boxes!!!!!!
