I've got bad teefies!

Lola and Ries went for their dental today and it seems that Ries has turned out to be one of those dogs with really bad teeth... He lost 5 teeth today in addition to the 3 he had already lost when he and a foster got into a fight over a bag of dog food. The vet said he didn't have a lot of tartar but his gums were starting to recede badly. Poor baby is only 5 years old and I'm scared he's going to be toofless by the time he is 10!

I went ahead and decided to get the dental vaccine for him hoping it would help save his remaining teeth. I also want to start doing some things that might help in addition to the vaccine. I know somebody on here (I'm thinking Amy???) gives their dogs some kind of water additive that helps with the tartar buildup?? Any other thoughts on what to do for him?

Oh and Lola had perfect teeth! No problems at all for her.

Oh, shoot. I'm sorry poor Ries lost some teeth. Amy uses Leba III (I think that's it). It's a spray that you just squirt in their mouth. I was using it on Miller, I"ve got to get back to it. She swears that it works wonders with Salsa. The only problem is that they can't have anything by mouth for 1 hour before or after the spray. I didn't have trouble doing it in the evening, but the mornings were a problem. But i'm going to start again.

Maxe had terrible teeth her whole life, but managed to hang onto most of them. Jules and Wendal will probably lose the few they have left before this year is out. Sending tons of toofie for poor Ries!

There's also something I used to add to Alex's water (my menopausal brain has sadly not retained its name...Orafresh? Something like that...), which also worked pretty well for tartar. Her last few years she could only tolerate meat and finally only my cooking for her and it was mush, so her teeth were almost black with tartar (because of her heart we couldn't do anything about it), but underneath they were healthy, and I credit the water additive.

Yes, I use Leba III. Salsa's teeth are hanging in there
It seems to reduce tartar but mainly it makes it very soft and it can be wiped off the teeth!. It IS hard to do twice a day (it's no food or drink 30 minutes before or after) but I only do it at night now..did a few months of twice by feeding them then putting up the water, setting the timer for 30 minutes, spraying, setting timer again, putting water down. So yes, that takes up an hour of morning time which isn't a big deal for me cuz I don't go to work.
Salsa also takes antibiotics 5 days a month. which she hates and is a pain too cuz she hates it but I really want her to keep her tiny teeth. Hers do look better and her HORRIBLE breath is much better..WAY better. Her two tiny front teeth on the bottom were brown and we thought they would fall out but they have whitened and tightened although there is still tartar on them (I'm afraid to mess with them cuz they were loose).

Oh, my, I'm so sorry. Bambi and Jewels (as well as Pixie) also have very bad teeth. The vet said that on Jewels and Pixie's cases is because of their size, they are way too small for the number of teeth dogs have and consequently tartar deposits easier on their mouth... poor babies.

Bambi also has receding gums, although she also had lots of tartar. I've been brushing what's left of her teeth every night, and I use VetzLife. I tried Aquadent on the water, it did not do anything for them.

When Bogart had to go to the doggie dentist have some work done, the dentist told me that they have a lot of problems with the very small dogs just because of that. Not enough room for the teeth in that tiny snout. That wasn't Bogart's problem, He was just old and had lots of tartar.

I"m starting Miller back on the Leba III this morning, twice a day for a while. I think it was really helping his teeth when I used it before. When things got so chaotic with all the remodeling, I just sort of got out of the habit.

Salsa's problems are for sure due to her being so small...her teeth are not only crowded but there is so little bone holding them in. Her jaw is unbelievably tiny! I mean...her whole head is smaller than a tennis ball LOL. Maybe like a raquet ball... and most of that is bulging round forhead
