    Default Help...oronasal fistula

    Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone can help. I just had my loveable little Fritz's dental surgery done and after a long 6 hour surgery he had 24 teeth removed including his upper K9's. The vet said when she probed the K9's there was "communication" and that he might get oronasal fistula's. WELL....sure enough he did!! I was wondering if anyone knows how much this surgery costs (both sides) and what is the likelihood, once repaired, if the repair will fail. Or can they live a comfortable, productive life without surgery.
Please help. He is the best dachshund that I have ever owned and only want to give him the best.

    Thanks in advance........

We thought this is what Cassie had since she started having nasal problems right after a dental cleaning. However, we took her to a dental specialist who checked her very thoroughly and that wasn't the problem. So I don't have much info to give you, except that surgery is the only definitive way to fix it, and I think it's a fairly common procedure especially for a specialist. I believe they can still sometimes open back up, though. Sending rayz for your guy!

If anyone else wants to know about oronasal fistulae, here is a good link showing what happens (read "The Silent Cause of Sneezing"). Apparently they are quite common in doxies.

As I learned with IVDD surgery, prices really vary. I see you are in Bradford, where are you thinking of having the surgery done? U of Guelph?

How old is Fritz? He is extremely cute btw!

I would price it out with a couple of different places. The Mississauga/Oakville clinic is amazing. The University of Guelph is where Pogo had his back surgery and they were incredible. Also if you have a passport, because it is important but not critical, I would contact a couple of places in Buffalo / Rochester or Detroit. It might be significantly cheaper to have it done in the States (or not!). If you could get his records via email, you can send them out to a couple of options to quote and do some research on each of them.

Good Luck! It is nice to see you back. :hello4:

Thanks everyone for your information. Every little bit counts. Fritz is only 3-so I would like to give him a long and healthy life. We also have another problem with him. He has subluxated patellas, so he needs to have surgery on those as well, so I don't want to put him through too much.!!!

A few years ago my Dodger had a fistula surgery, it was not successful. Possibly it didn't work because he was 10 yo.
However, I do second Kim's suggestion of a dental specialist at least for a second opinion consult.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and for Fritz. He is a very handsome young boy! :hearts:
They may be small, but you should see their hearts. Shelter/Rescue dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter/rescue dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness on your side. Anon

    bless his sweet little heart!
did I miss something? What caused the poor little guy to have to get his teef pulled at 3?

I have no experience with this (thank goodness) but wish you guys all the best! He is a beautiful little guy and I can see how he would worm right into your heart and OWN it.

Great advice given here, and again, for a successful resolution.

If he's lost so many teeth so young, I'd definitely get a specialist involved... seems like he must be prone to serious periodontal disease, and then I think you would see recurrent fistulae - they might have recommendations that would help minimize the problem.

Such a handsome guy!!! :hearts: You and Fritz should stop by more often!
