Maybe hire a student or someone who has retired even to walk her a few times a day? We all keep saying it gets better and it does, hang in there. Savannah will calm down a lot after she is spayed which is usually done at 6 months.
I totally agree - I wouldn't medicate unless absolutely necessary, but sometimes for the sake of sanity, it's necessary. Are there any other puppies around she could play with to get worn out? That would be perfect - maybe a sibling???

Do you have a treadmill at home? Maybe you can run her on it before bed time to tire her out.

I keep hearing that she will chill a bit after the spay... we are on track for the 6 month thing which will be around the first of November.

thank y'all ALL so much for your patience and guidance. I have not had a puppy since college, and I have NEVER had a doxie puppy... which is DIFFERENT than having a regular puppy

I popped her half a benadryl last night and it was GOOD. I had 2 myself and we slept, thank goodness.

I've been known to use rescue remedy & benedryl on Jax & Julie & they're practically seniors! (Ok, not both drugs at one time. In not that crazy) Hang in there. And remember, a whiskey at night & Irish coffee in the morning never hurt anyone....just sayin'...

Great thread on the realities of raising a dachshund puppy! Rae, I really hope you are getting more sleep now.

Marta was on a diuretic (and had other medical issues) and had to go out every 2-3 hours, even at night, for over a year. (1am, 3am, 5am, 7am, etc.) When I created an indoor potty spot with fake grass and her scent, she looked at me like I had framed her.

I hear you on the sleep thing! Again, I really hope you are getting more sleep. I about fell over when my doctor suggested getting a puppy…

    Default Update

there is sleeping. Shocking though it is, Savannah Jane is rounding the bend on two years old (?!?!) with a birthday of May 1.

She has calmed down a LOT but still doesn't like to sleep at night. We resorted to the Squirt Bottle O Doom and she hates it. Sometimes I sleep with it in my hand, dangled over the side of the bed... where she can see it... lol

She is a joy and I adore her. She is high energy and therefore sometimes high maintenance, but the joy sure outweighs the exasperation factor.

We are down to going outside to potty ONE time in the night, and she is doing really well with her peeing. She refuses to in the house. She'll poop on the rug by the back door if I don't get there in time, but honestly I'd much rather pick up a tootsie roll with a tissue than try to get pee out of carpet.

Although we were iced in yesterday, she did go outside to pee. I was so proud. We had about an 8 inch drift at the back door, but she hopped right up on it and went 15 feet (I know because that's how long the leash is!) and peed. Every time.

She is also staying home with Daddy consistently instead of going to Dr. Brian's to board. Daddy says she is a different dog (well behaved, chilled) when Mommy isn't home. Imagine.
