The soybean board does projects relating to soy and its uses. The board had had interest in providing pet food to shelter (s) in the state, and Hills Science Diet has a plant here, so we wanted to support them since they are local.
Three different people, including our executive director, have tried to get in touch with the right people at HSD and when I came on board I made it a priority. Of course I have succeeded. We didn't ask for free food - we have the funds - but wanted the best price we could get. Ended up buying it through my vet at cost.
So, I've researched shelters in each of our five regions and we're starting to award the food. FIVE shelters are going to get a pallet of food each. That may not be much, but it's something, and it's about $5,000 worth of dog food going to shelters that I have personally checked out with my area rescue contacts.
these are low-kill shelters and they all have excellent volunteer programs and SPAY AND NEUTER before they adopt the animals out. One I talked to today is closed on Wednesday because all they do on Wednesdays (besides feed, water and walk) is surgeries.
I am so excited. The HSD food uses soybean meal and soybean oil, but has meat as its first ingredients.
