Not always. From what I've been told, Miniature dachshunds were bred down from standards. Whenever animals are bred down to be smaller there is the chance of having one turn out larger. I had a dog out of 2 small parents (around 10 lbs) and she was 18 lbs when full grown. I asked my vet if they had lied to us and those weren't really her parents. While the vet said that was always possible, she also said that there are occasionally "throwbacks" to the larger dogs. It happens.

According to the American kennel Club standards:

Hound Group; AKC recognized in 1885.
Dachshunds can be standard or miniature size. Standards range from 16-32 pounds, while Miniatures weigh 11 pounds and under.

so doxies weighing between 11 and 16 pounds are referred to as "tweenies" because they are "between" the two recognized size classifications.

However big or small Sven may be, he'll be a sweetheart.

That is exactly what happened with our Pom! His parents and litter mates are all between 5-7 lbs, him? He's almost 25 now! Apparently he's what they call a throwback pom, where they are bred down to size from the spitz, the gene slips through every now and then and you get a spitz sized pom.

In the old days there were dachshunds that were 30+ lbs and bred to hunt. Now, 30+ lb dachshunds are pretty rare.

    Does size really matter?

My boys in my signature pic,

Rusty (Red smooth) is 12lbs a mini

    Odie (Black/Tan/Pis) is 9lbs a mini

Baxter (Red long hair) is 18lbs. His breeder (we rescued he came with orig. papers) says he is a mini. My groomer who shows LH Standard dachshunds says he is a small standard aka "tweenie"

Heres a photo for size comparison since it is hard to tell in my siggy

My answer to this question is absolutely not. I love my Scooter (aka the Uber Dox) at 35 lbs just as much as I did little Bogart at 11 lbs. Size is way too superficial a trait to even worry about.

True that! The largest fur babies we ever had in the family were a standard collie and a St. Bernard, the smallest, a very small, very sickly senior yorkie that we rescued. Large to small, we loved 'em all!

Lol. I just thought he looked like a big boy, nothing wrong with that. More to love!
