Default Charlie is about to be renamed...

    ....to The Ripper :(
    Sorry this is somewhat long...

He is doing really well on everything but the biting. I know he is a puppy and puppies bite but I have read a lot on the issue and all the articles say to yelp or say ouch really loud when his mouthing becomes too hard. I just imagine he is seeing red or something because he doesn't respond at all to those things. Sometimes I can't even get a toy in his mouth to redirect. Getting up and acting like a tree is difficult if I haven't armed my feet and ankles with my Uggs ahead if time because he just attacks them.

I've started putting him in his playpen and he calms down but when I go to get him he starts back up again. I "think" I have noticed a pattern that he starts up when he is really tired or when he has to pee. I say pee because several times that I have put him in the playpen he pees a little bit on his pad..or could just be that he is peeing because he is upset to be being out in the playpen.

    I'm frustrated

If this is normal please tell me and I can deal with it. Or does it look like he is a more aggressive than usual puppy?

And as soon as I was done typing this he was passed out in the playpen. Maybe he is telling me he is ready for a nap?

have you tried squirting him with a water bottle when he does something he shouldn't? We call it the Water Bottle of Doom! ;-)

also try taking a pop can and putting coins in it, close the opening. When he does something he shouldn't, shake the can & give a command.

Karen, I can't speak for "normal puppies," but I can say that Savannah Jane was a needle-toothed biting FIEND for the first... year maybe of her life? Those little mouth-razors HURT!

Savannah is the poster child for "wild as a BAT" and I promise she has calmed down and is a joy.

Hang tough. I skipped the yelping and SBOD (squirt bottle o doom) and the can o pennies and rocks and went straight for "NO BITE!" in Mommy's Ugly Voice.

Hi! To me, its perfectly normal. Some puppies are more aggressive than others and bit harder or it lasts longer. My Theo, did the same thing. Would not stop biting no matter what I tried and I did everything you are doing. I would yelp really loud and it didn't seem to bother him, he'd stop, look at me and continue biting. My arms are proof of his biting and razor sharp teeth. Hang it there, it does get better, really it does. He is teething. Once his teeth start to fall out, this should stop. Theo was a royal pain as a pup biting me all the time and now he is just the sweetest dog. Hang in there! Maybe freeze a kong with peanut butter in it or something to keep him busy and numb the pain, I think it hurts them when they are teething just as it hurts our human babies.

Thanks so much everyone for the replies. Almost makes me weep with joy to hear he is not the devils spawn LOL
I was about to grab a spray bottle o doom when I decided to just put him to bed. I am going to keep it out for next time and make the can o doom!!

He couldn't give a rats tush about mommy's ugly voice haha!

Am I doing bad by putting him to bed when he goes crazy? I don't want him to think of his playpen as a place of punishment but one, he seems to be perfectly ok to go in and go to sleep (except the few times when he has tinkled) and two, we will be switching over to a real crate in the next couple weeks. I think I will keep the playpen handy for a little while though so if he does need a time out he can go there and his crate will not have to be involved.

Funny, as I type this I realize there probably isn't a lot of right and wrong (besides the obvious of course) but venting it sure does feel good and I'm really thankful to have found this group cuz I know you get it

I do have good things to share I promise but while he is sleeping I gotta go get some work done ;)

It is like having a frigging newborn... except for the whole crate training thing...
hang in there. SJ IS the devil's spawn, and she got better.

The Squirt Bottle of Doom was my first thought. If plain water doesn't work, put a little vinegar in there. I have yet to see the dog that likes vinegar.

Lots of good suggestions, most doxies hate the squirt bottle but there are a few who don't mind it. He's just a normal puppy. I've had one and that was enough. Now I just adopt adults! Besides, they are usually housetrained, too.

You have to hold his snout and loudly say "No Biting". Also grab the scruff of the neck like the mom dog does and say no"
