    Default Another potty training question!

Couple of weeks ago, Sansa gets an operation for sterilization . The point is, she was doing great before it, having nearly a perfect score in the potty training. After the visit at the vet (she was there 30 hours), it was a real fiasco during 3-4 days. She was doing it anytime, anywhere, even in front of us...! And then it gets better and now (3 weeks after) she's doing great (not perfect, but very good, I've heard that perfect is very difficult for Dachshunds).

Is that the traumatism of the vet? Will it happens everytime she lives something like that?

Before that, I also noticed that when I was having friends over for diner, she has that problem for a day or two also. After that I had many diner party at my home and she was ok, so I guess she gets used to it. My theory is that she have that kind of problems when she's "out of her routine"... Is that possible?

Very definitely. I've had to do Potty Training 101 every time I've moved. Whenever they have an upsetting experience they can definitely regress in the potty habits.

And, yes, 100% is hard to achieve with dachshunds. I'm usually happy with 50%

I never had troubles training Theo, he'll use a pee pad during the night if he has to go otherwise never has accidents in the house, even when he was crated for 8 weeks with IVDD he never has accidents...now for Mika, a whole different story..I found it much hard to train Mika...is it a girl thing? I don't know. She too well go on pee pads during the night if she has to but I have to remind her, she will stand near my pillow and stare at me, till I wake up but I am lazy, I don't take them outside in the middle of the night when its -20 here!! To cold..otherwise they do well..Mika is 8 now and still has the occasional accident but its a Doxie thing! Any changes in routine messes her up, she also gets excited when I have company over and will occasionally have an little piddle. Actually, Theo too gets excited come to think of it, I use a belly band on him when company comes over then remove it when he has calmed down. I really don't mind, its just pee. could be worse!

Each dog is different, but yes, doxies are difficult to housetrain as a rule. My Lexie would go outside if everything was perfect; no wind, no clouds, etc. . Jack is 99.9% perfect as to housetraining. One time it poured for hours and he just could not hold it any longer. I understood that and could not blame him. Now that he's getting older, sometimes if it is cold outside, I have to carry him out to grass and then he will go and run right back in. Praise like crazy when they potty where they should, and maybe a tiny treat. I still praise Jack when he goes outside, for reinforcement, even though he's about 14! Just keep Eco-88 handy!

Since the vet episode, I gave her treats most of the time when she does her thing in the right place, or if I forgot those inside, I congratulate her! It seems to be working pretty well because there was only one accident in a week. And I guess I'm lucky, she's not very indisposed by the weather, except for a strong wind, but even so, she just doesn't go far away and comes back quickly. And I'm very happy that she LOVES the snow. Really, it's almost annoying she wants to play a long time in the snow (and at 5 in the morning, I'm not that cooperative...!).

How lucky you are! Most doxies do not like inclement weather!

    Thumbs up

    I know, I hope it won't change!
