We have those coming in our yard from the golf course. It's especially bad when they are trying to find a place to lay eggs. Then they are everywhere. You have to be careful driving thru the neighborhood so that you don't hit one. I hate having them come in the backyard because of the dogs. I've never had one get snapped and don't want to start. Last year when I came home for lunch one day, I let the dogs out as usual. I was in the kitchen and saw that one of them had just come under the gate and I saw Scooter heading for it. I ran as fast as I could to get out on the deck and yell and Scooter to get back and then nudge the turtle under the gate with a rake. I"m not too thrilled about the idea of getting pinched and didn't want to pick her up.

Sadly, they lay eggs in our front yard all the time and then the squirrels get them. I'm guessing turtles aren't the smartest animals because this has been going on for 15 years now and they just keep laying their eggs there.

Snapping turtles are kind of scary, but I love turtles in any form. But I'm glad she got gone before the dogs noticed!!

We have a geriatric leather-back looking turtle who makes the pilgrimage from pond to pond in the spring, then back in the fall. Sometimes we get to watch.

If it bites your finger off in one chomp = snapper.
