    Default Toofie rayz please! *updated*

Buster Brown is going in for his dental today. It's kinda weird having a healthy senior but still, I worry. He was most put out to discover only about a 1/4" of chicken broth in his b'fast dish this morning, no doubt wondering what fresh hell was this? . It's been quite a while since one of my kids had surgery (Jules' splenectomy if I recall...) so any rayz gratefully appreciated. I have to teach tonight, so hopefully be the time I go to get them tonight (the girls are staying at the clinic too...)he'll be fully recovered.

Toofer rayz coming Buster's way. Mitch did fine last year. I babied him with soft food for a couple days but he got to see his girlfriend so he wasn't too bent out of shape.

Sending for Buster. Bogart had a dental and lost several teeth at about 13 or 14 and Miller had one at 10 or 11. I was so worried both times and they both came thru fine. They were both somewhat awake but a bit groggy the first evening.

    Default *Update*

Well, Laura just called, and the good news is that Bussy is out of surgery, had no extractions, and is just fine.

However, of course, with my dogs, it's never that simple . Laura didn't do his initial exam, so this is her first chance to get a really good look at him. He's been on some wierd thyroid drug which is supposed to be given with food. NO thyroid medication should be given with food...they're ALL supposed to be on an empty stomach, so we both agree that whatever this is (his former people picked it up in Mexico), it's probably bogus. So we're going to take him off it for a month or so and retest his thyroid to see what's really going on. She also thinks he might be Cushinoid, so at some point, we'll test for that too. He's got a bunch of weird little bumps on his throat, and she's concerned that they might be the remnants of worms or nematodes from his time in Mexico as well (his people took him down there most of his life to their winter place until 2 years ago when he got bitten by something and almost died. Then he stayed home . She took a couple of them off and looked at them under the microscope and is a bit concerned about them (they're also really itchy). He's got a HUGE and growing lump on his chest, so she did an aspirate biopsy but I don't have the results of that yet. She doesn't think it's a lipoma, but isn't sure what it might be. It may end up coming off at some point too. His heart's not bad, possibly the beginning of a murmur, but then, he'll be 12 in Dec, so that's not surprising. We're also going to get him onto a good skin food (turkey and sweet potato, grain free) which might help with his itchies (she thinks that, his coat, his weight and some of the blood readings are Cushings related).

So my "healthy" dog did what all my dogs do, wait til they get into my house and reveal all .

    But wait!!! There's more!

I asked her to take a look at Ferk's LH leg because she's been kind of toeing in the last few days. Turns out that she's got a partially torn cruciate ligament...not a full tear, thank goodness, because she is of course, not a surgical candidate. But she's on restricted movement for the foreseeable future. I've also noticed that her lower jaw seems to be receding...it's muscle atrophy from lack of teeth (she's not chewing, so they're not getting any exercise). Not a bad thing...I was worried that it might be bone cancer. Her lungs and heart are pretty much the same...not great, but no worse (as good as can be expected, is what Laura said).

I was afraid to have her look at Heidi

I'll pick them all up when I'm done teaching at 7. Did I mention the teaching's to pay my vet bills??

GOOD GRIEF CHARLIE BROWN, COULD YOU GET ANY WEIRDER INFO FROM A DENTAL????

Lisa, they now recommend either never give it with food or always give it with food... it's absorbed better without food, but since your doctor adjusts the dose based on blood levels, it will work itself out as long as you take it the same way all the time. But I'd be a little suspicious of one you HAD to give with food.

Ferkel is a tough little girl, isn't she? Clearly she likes life pretty well these days and isn't real interested in moving on just yet .
