    Default Ulcerative Stomatitis and Tooth Extractions

    Hello - thank you for taking the time to read this.

    My 9yr old dachshund has been diagnosed with cups - chronic ulcerative paradental stomatitis. This condition causes painful ulcers in her mouth. We’ve had her teeth cleaned twice in 2019 to try and help calm the ulcers. I try to brush her teeth but she resists and hates it. Her mouth is otherwise in good condition, minimal bone loss, minimal recession.

    Just went to a vet dental specialist. Sounds like there’s no good solution.

    Option 1) Full mouth extraction.

    Option 2) Partial mouth extractions of teeth adjacent to ulcers.
    Then dental cleaning every 3mos (expensive and she’s so nervous going to vet)
    She has a heart murmur - worry about her going under anesthesia so often.
    I need to brush her teeth 2x a day. She hates getting her teeth brushed.

    Questions;
    - Has anyone had a dachshund have partial mouth extractions and have stomatitis cured?
    - What will my dachshunds life be like without teeth?

    Thanks!!!!

    I can't speak to the first question as I have no experience with it, but many of my old guys have wound up toothless and it has absolutely no effect beyond chewing bones etc. They even were happy eating kibble and treats (inhalers of food to a dog ). If it means being pain free for the rest of her life, that's what I'd do. Recovery can be a bit rough, but is short. Sending a ton of toofie your way!

    Thank you! I agree - a life without pain is my goal. How bad was recovery after extractions?

    Pixel lost 16 teeth in one day. It was rough, but he made it through okay (he was 15 at the time). I would maybe do it over 2 surgeries, vs. one big one? Is she on antibiotics or anything for treatment now? Also before extraction, I would highly recommend an allergy / food sensitivity test. Maybe that is the underlying cause?

    Poor baby girl. If it means being pain free, and a cure, I would absolutely remove the teeth.

    It was a rough couple of days but pain meds helped. They recover quite quickly, all things considered.
