Unhappy My Trooper is sick :(

My oldie boy Trooper (German Shepherd, 9 years old) has hypothyroidism. He's decreased in activity level and has lost weight. He is shedding horribly and his skin has gotten worse. He has to go in for more blood work to see what levels of medication he needs to be on, but his levels are really low. He's not in any danger of dying, but I feel awful that he's been suffering and I didn't know what was going on.

At any rate, he will be placed on some meds that he'll have to take the rest of his life. Does anyone else have experience with this??

    Thanks!

I don't have personal experience, but I had a friend whose cardigan corgi was on Synthroid for years and did really well.

Geeze, if only we could power our cars on the worry we've had for our dogs these past few days!

My old dog Kerby had hypothyroidism and did really well on the meds. Her coat improved and her skin did too. She lived to be 16.... the medication was inexpensive, too. I think she started taking it when she was 12 or so.

One of my parents dogs is on thyroid meds. She had started to lose her fur in odd places and looked like a "very balding, mangey dog" but on the meds her hair has grown pretty much back except the odd small patch.

She isn't that old.. she is around 2 1/2 to 3.
